Excerpt from Chapter One - A Few Recollections
"One night, not long after my stay in the ward began, I experienced a most terrifying ordeal. It was very early in the morning, around two or three o'clock when, in a dazed state, I realized that a woman in a flowing nightgown was trying to push me off the bed on which I lay. I must mention at this point that my injured leg was "in traction". In other words, I lay on my back all of the time with a kind of pulley, having a weight at its end, attached to my leg and foot. This was done so that the head of the dislocated femur or thighbone would be kept in the hip socket and help initiate healing. Any sudden, forceful movement could cause another dislocation.
The woman - it was more of an apparition - climbed on top of me, moved to my side, and sat on my feet in her attempts to move me from the position in which I lay. Whatever it was that attacked me, it made no sound. There was a menacing look on its face as it sought relentlessly to harm me. I yelled and panted as I tried to fight it off. I knew what it was trying to do but I would not allow it!
I called out to God in my attempts to ward off the assault. The whole incident lasted about five minutes. By the time it ended, I was fully awake and gasping for breath. My roommate had heard the commotion and wanted to know what was going on. A thick, drawn curtain separated our areas in the room and he could not have seen anything.
He was, of course, taken aback at my story, and I sensed that he too was scared."
"Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments."
